MANCHESTER RECIEVES TOP SCORE FROM CDP FOR THIRD CONSECUTIVE YEAR
Manchester has made the CDP Cities A list for the third year in a row, demonstrating a continued commitment to transparent and data-informed climate action.
In 2024, nearly 1,000 other cities from across the world disclosed their environmental data to CDP, with just 112 cities, including Manchester, achieving an A rating. Visit the CDP website to access the full CDP Cities A list.
Mike Wilton, Chair of the Manchester Climate Change Partnership said: “I am so pleased that Manchester, for the third year in a row, has been judged as the equal of global cities such as Seattle, Paris and Milan, in our work to address the causes of global climate change and prepare for its consequences. In these challenging times, it is great to see that more cities across the world are, like Manchester, putting climate action at the heart of their plans to create successful, inclusive places for their communities (click here to read the Our Manchester Strategy 2025-2030). We know the challenge is demanding, but the benefits of success will be felt by current and future generations.”
The CDP Cities A list has been designed to encourage and support cities to ramp up their climate action and ambition. As the world’s leading climate reporting platform and progress accountability mechanism for cities and local governments, CDP helps cities understand their impact and take action.
Cllr Tracey Rawlins, Executive Member for Environment, said: “Manchester achieving CDP A list status for the third consecutive year is a great achievement, it demonstrates that as a city we are taking the right steps to ensure that we're understanding our impact and developing the right plans. Whilst this recognition from CDP is positive, we know there are challenges ahead. If Manchester is to play its full part in addressing the climate crisis, we need to increase the pace and scale of our action. Everyone has a role to play and working collaboratively will be key to our success.”
To score an A, a city must disclose publicly through CDP-ICLEI Track, have a city-wide emissions inventory, and have published a climate action plan. It must also complete a climate risk and vulnerability assessment and have a climate adaptation goal to demonstrate how it will tackle climate hazards.
